Why Choose the Internal Medicine Residency at Greenwich Hospital

I enjoy working at Greenwich Hospital because it fosters a genuine sense of community. Every resident receives comprehensive support from our faculty. Whether your goal is fellowship, primary care, or inpatient hospitalist work, the faculty is dedicated to helping you excel.

We know each other well and live close by. The program director and administration are familiar with all residents. In the hospital, we are distinctly recognised as the residents.

A Unique Training Experience

Internal Medicine Residency Training at Greenwich Hospital is truly unique. Our exceptional faculty and affiliation with Yale New Haven Health, combined with our size and location, allow us to provide top-notch training in a special community hospital setting.

Why Choose the Internal Medicine Residency at Greenwich Hospital The program here in Greenwich Hospital is very special. Here, we are able to know our attendings on a very personal and professional level. Sometimes we can even talk like friends, and we are able to call each other on a first-name basis. In some programs, you might be one resident among many. Here, the attendings really want to get to know you and teach you, and it is a very overall amicable environment.

We are actually able to see a lot of variety of pathologies here, from simple pneumonia and heart failure to even rare cases like pellagra. The residents were even able to write case reports on those different cases. I think that really enhanced our learning opportunities right here despite its smaller size in Greenwich.

Handling Challenges and Training During COVID

When the COVID crisis started, basically, our outpatient clinic shut down. The ICU was expanded from 10-patient capacity to a 20-patient capacity, and the ICU teams required twice the number of residents. Although we were on the front line of the response, we never felt like we were pushed into positions where we would not be protected.

We felt like the increase in acuity of the patients and the amount of procedures we had to do and the number of patients themselves was an enhancement to our inpatient training because we were getting to do more work faster than we were required to do before. So it was actually an enhancement of our training and not an interruption of our resident duties.

Despite schedule adjustments, increased patient volume, and shifting demands, our core resident training continued uninterrupted.

Wellness, Support, and Quality of Life

Coming into residency here at Greenwich Hospital, I was always worried that it would be very stressful and a lot of work. While it is a lot of work, they do a great job of minimising the stress associated with it. One of the things they do here is provide stipends for our meals, so we do not ever have to worry about paying for food or running out of money.

The other thing the program does is subsidise the housing for us. We live in an apartment complex very close to the hospital. It is only a two-minute walk, and it really helps us to get to know each other and build a sense of camaraderie.

Why Choose the Internal Medicine Residency at Greenwich Hospital One of the other great things about this hospital is the focus on mental and physical well-being. We have a wellness council that is run by residents, and we meet on a monthly basis, where we create events and gatherings where we can destress and just relax. I think that does great for our mental health.

Living in Greenwich, Connecticut

I love Greenwich. It is a great place to live. I am from London, the United Kingdom, and for me, it is a home away from home. The best thing about Greenwich is the location. We are right on the water here. As a resident in the program here, the time gives you access to Greenwich Point Beach, which is a great place for families to spend the weekends. You can go sailing, you can go swimming.

Greenwich itself is beautiful. We have the main avenue just down the road here, which has got so many boutiques and accessible stores, cafes, and restaurants. The train station, just under an hour, gets you straight to Grand Central in Manhattan. You can drive within 30 minutes as well, or you can go north up to New Haven in an hour. You have Yale University and all the opportunities there.

All in all, it is a fantastic place to live, and that is why I chose to carry on living here in this community as an attending physician, as so many other people do.
